Mastering Change

Some simple steps to successful change

The Mastering Change Implementation workshop teaches you how to make change happen in your business without creating more grief and pain than necessary. Learn to address these important questions...

1. Why change now?

There are some good business reasons for implementing the changes you have in mind. A common mistake lies in not explaining those reasons to the staff.

What data do you have to show the need for the change? Why are we doing it now and not last year or next year? Is there a "burning platform"?

2. What will it look like after the change?

You will have a vision of what the business will look like after the changes are implemented. The change will happen in stages. It is important to document and explain them to those who are affected by the change.

What are the specific goals and objectives? What will happen first? How will we know it's working? What is the time line?

3. Who will lead the change?

Inevitably change is led one on one. Staff will look to their immediate team leader for specific guidance on what the change means to them. It's critical to identify and include the opinion leaders into the change project.

What are the communication and information needs of the opinion leaders? How do we include them in the change team?

4. How do we communicate the change to those involved?

Staff, customers, shareholders, managers are all targets for the change. Making sure they are communicated with effectively is very important. Understanding their various needs for information in times of change is vital.

What's in it for each group to get involved? What is the value to them of the change? How do we express the attributes of the change so they see the benefits?

5. What systemic barriers can slow the change?

Systems, supervisors and structures all need to be reviewed. Those that will slow down the change implementation need to be changed to support the changes. Aspects of the corporate culture need to modified to anchor the changes into "the way we do things around here".

Is our organisation structure right? Are we recruiting the right people for our future? How do our pay and reward processes support the change?
